The Finder has always offered a preview pane as part of the Columns view mode. What you may not know is that this Quick Look preview can also be activated in any view mode: icon, list, column, or Cover Flow. Believe it or not, this feature didn't arrive until El Capitan, although it's limited to list and cover Flow views, and isn't available when icon view is being used.
